Lyle is a city located in Mower County, Minnesota in Lyle Township. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 566.

Geography

Image:MNMap-doton-Lyle.png According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 566 people, 211 households, and 148 families residing in the city. The population density was 283.8/km² (733.2/mi²). There were 225 housing units at an average density of 112.8/km² (291.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.82% White, 0.00% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.35% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 211 households out of which 37.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% were married couples living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% were non-families. 25.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.26.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 17.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,464, and the median income for a family was $42,500. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $24,107 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,624. 9.4% of the population and 4.2% of families were below the poverty line. 9.4% of those under the age of 18 and 11.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

School

Lyle is served by the Lyle Independent School District. This district is merged for purposes of athletics with Austin Pacelli, a Catholic high school in Austin, Minnesota. During the summer of 2005, the Lyle area was engaged in a bitter fight over a school bond referendum. This fight created severe divisions in the community. The fight was made more intense following the arrival of a paid anti-school bond consultant from Ocheyedan, Iowa. The bond did pass in an election in which over 98% of eligible voters participated. The new school will be built on the site of the existing facility.
