Mackay is a city located in Custer County, Idaho. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 566.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 566 people, 261 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 251.2/km² (651.8/mi²). There were 353 housing units at an average density of 156.7/km² (406.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.59% White, 0.00% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 2.30% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 261 households out of which 23.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 5.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.9% were non-families. 39.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,807, and the median income for a family was $31,667. Males had a median income of $38,750 versus $20,357 for females.
