The Maffei 1 Group (also known as IC 342 group) is the nearest group of galaxies to our own Local Group; it was probably once part of the Local Group but was ejected following a violent encounter with the Andromeda Galaxy. Its dominant member is the spiral galaxy IC 342, but was named after the giant elliptical galaxy, Maffei 1, which, together with Maffei 2, was discovered on infrared plates in 1968 by the Italian astronomer Paolo Maffei (1926-). Both galaxies lie near the galactic equator in Cassiopeia in the Zone of avoidance and are thus heavily obscured at visible wavelengths by dust and gas. Maffei 2 is a medium-sized, average-brightness barred spiral galaxy about 16 million light-years away, while the distance to Maffei 1 has been put at around 10 million light-years. Other known galaxies in the group are Dwingeloo 1 and it's satellite galaxy Dwingeloo 2, and some smaller systems, including two possible satellites of Maffei 1 (MB1 and MB2).

Observing the Maffei 1 group in the future
Image:Milky Way Spiral Arms.png
The Sun orbits around our Galaxy every 225 Million Years. In about 112 Million Years in the Future, we'll be on the other side of our Galaxy. Most Galaxies we see now will be in the Zone of Avoidance. Andromeda, Triangulum, & many more Galaxies will be Obstucted from our view. But in their place will be a whole new set of Galaxies just waiting to be discovered. The Maffei Group of Galaxies will be better seen during this time. the best seen Galaxies will possibly be Maffei 1, Maffei 2, Dwingeloo 1, & Dwingeloo 2.
