Main-gauche
From Free net encyclopedia
In fencing, the main-gauche (French for "left hand") is a dagger used in the off-hand, mainly to assist in parrying incoming thrusts, while the right hand wields a sabre, a rapier or similar longer weapon intended for one-handed use. It may also be used for attack if an opportunity arises.
The term main-gauche also refers to the style of fencing with a blade in each hand. It is rarely used in modern sport competition, as it was discovered that fencing with only the primary weapon allowed for greater balance and a stance offering a smaller target area. Thus, it is usually reserved for exhibition demonstrations
