Materialization (parapsychology)
From Free net encyclopedia
- This article is about the concept in parapsychology. For the concept in science fiction see materialization (science fiction).
A materialization is the creation or appearance of matter from nowhere and out of nothing. Some miracles reportedly involve materializations. The existence of the paranormal phenomenon of materializations is disputed and has never been observed under controlled circumstances. The creation of mass would break generally accepted scientific laws such as the conservation of energy. Other theories claim that materialization is related to teleportation (the existence of which is also disputed), in that matter is not spontaneously created, but merely transported from another location, and possibly altered in form.
The most famous example of a materialization in Christianity is the story of the multiplication of bread and fish by Jesus to feed a hungry crowd, according to the Bible (John 6:1-15 & Mark 6:35-44).
The contemporary gurus Indian Sathya Sai Baba (SSB) and Swami Premananda claim to perform materializations but both are accused of fraud. Spontaneous vibuthi (holy ash) manifestations are also reported by followers of SSB on his pictures at their homes.
