Menahga is a city located in Wadena County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,220.
The writer-illustrator Wally Wood, best known as one of the original five Mad Comics cartoonists, was born in Menahga on June 17, 1927. Wood's childhood in Menahga was documented by Bhob Stewart in an illustrated biography, Against the Grain: Mad Artist Wallace Wood (TwoMorrows, 2003).
Menahga means "blueberry' in the Chippewa language.[1]
Geography
Image:MNMap-doton-Menahga.png According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²). 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.10% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,220 people, 491 households, and 282 families residing in the city. The population density was 126.6/km² (328.3/mi²). There were 556 housing units at an average density of 57.7/km² (149.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.36% White, 0.08% African American, 0.98% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. 0.33% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 491 households out of which 25.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.4% were non-families. 37.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 20.2% from 25 to 44, 17.4% from 45 to 64, and 33.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 81.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $22,232, and the median income for a family was $30,288. Males had a median income of $26,071 versus $18,594 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,360. 18.7% of the population and 14.7% of families were below the poverty line. 22.6% of those under the age of 18 and 12.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
