Microsoft Dynamics GP is a mid-market business accounting software package that runs on top of a SQL database server. It is a part of Microsoft Dynamics.

The product was originally made by Great Plains, an independent company that produced this software for years. In late 2000, Microsoft announced the purchase of the Great Plains company. This acquisition was completed in April, 2001.

Macros

Great Plains was one of the first accounting packages with capability to record and play back macros[1]. Macros are saved in .MAC files in the Dexterity programming language. It is possible to export data from Excel or Access to Great Plains modules by programming a Visual Basic macro to create a MAC file using data from the spreadsheet or database. The MAC file would contain commands to enter specific data into Great Plains; for each set of data, a new MAC file would need to be created.

Editions

Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0, the current version, is available in two editions:

  • Standard: Up to 10 simultaneous users, and 500 payroll employees per defined company.
  • Professional: Unlimited users, additional user-level security options, consolidation tools, automatic purchase order generation, and more reporting/analysis options. In addition, Professional Edition includes additional manufacturing and field service modules.

Microsoft has published a complete feature comparison table at their web site.[2]

Versions

Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 was released in November 2005. Prior versions were named Microsoft Great Plains 7.5 and Microsoft Great Plains 8.0. Both worked with Microsoft SQL Server.
