Microsoft first published Entourage in October of 2000 as part of the Microsoft Office 2001 office suite; Office 98, the previous version of Microsoft Office for Mac OS, included Outlook Express 5.
Entourage is essentially analogous to Microsoft Outlook. Microsoft has continued to develop and support Entourage, releasing Entourage X as part of Office X in November 2001, and Entourage 2004 as part of Office 2004 in May 2004.
Entourage's personal information management features include a calendar, address book, task list, note list, and project manager. However, Entourage (especially the earliest versions) lacks some of the groupware functionality of Outlook when acting as a Microsoft Exchange Server client. Although Microsoft continues to improve Entourage's groupware capabilities, users must rely on Microsoft Outlook for full functionality on Exchange Server networks.
With Entourage 2004, Microsoft began offering a Project Center, which allows the user to create and organize projects. Information may come from within Entourage or outside the program.
Entourage keeps e-mail and attachments within one large database which eventually could become corrupt and need repair. Microsoft provides Database Utility which allows the user to rebuild and compact Entourage data.
In January 2006, Microsoft MacBU (business unit) general manager Roz Ho appeared alongside Apple CEO Steve Jobs at Macworld. Ho announced that the Redmond, Washington-based company had signed a formal, five-year agreement with Apple. The pact signaled Microsoft's plans to develop Microsoft Office for Mac for both PowerPC and Intel-based Macintosh computers.
At Macworld, Jobs demonstrated Microsoft Office 2004 running under Rosetta on an iMac Core Duo with impressive performance. Rosetta is a translating emulator for Mac OS X designed to run application programs designed for the PowerPC processor to run on Apple computers based on Intel processors.
