The following are minor characters from the Harry Potter series who belong to Hufflepuff House. The characters Cedric Diggory and Pomona Sprout, also Hufflepuffs, have their own articles, as does Hepzibah Smith, who is a descendent of Helga Hufflepuff. The Fat Friar is listed in the Hogwarts ghosts article.

Hannah Abbott

Template:HP Character Hannah Abbott is in the same year as Harry and, thanks to her name, the first person in the series to be Sorted. She is the only Hufflepuff student who has appeared in all six novels published to date. She has blonde hair worn in pigtails and is described as "pink-faced". In her fifth year, Hannah was named one of the prefects for Hufflepuff house, and she also joined Dumbledore's Army. Her closest friends are Ernie Macmillan and Justin Finch-Fletchley.

Hannah seems to have good instincts about people. When Ernie Macmillian suspected that Harry was the Heir of Slytherin, Hannah was skeptical of this, saying that Harry had "always seemed so nice". During the hunt for Sirius Black the following year, she theorised that Black could disguise himself as a flowering shrub, a conclusion that, while factually incorrect, did turn out to have some truth in it. She sported a Support Cedric Diggory badge early in the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, although she remains on good terms with Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

Hannah is rather high-strung. During fifth year, she was so worried about O.W.L. exams that she suffered a nervous breakdown in Herbology class and had to be given a calming draught by Madam Pomfrey. She was also seen frantically checking out a bunch of books from the library, and turned her ferret into a whole flock of flamingos instead of vanishing it, during her practical Transfiguration O.W.L. exam. However, she was also part of the group who came to Harry's aid against Draco Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle aboard the Hogwarts Express at the end of the year.

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, her mother was murdered by Death Eaters. Therefore Hannah did not return to Hogwarts for the remainder of the book.

Hannah is believed to be Muggle-born, based on a page of notes J.K. Rowling briefly showed during the "Harry Potter and Me" TV special in 2001, but this has not been confirmed in the actual books - it has probably been changed, as it would be very rare for someone's Muggle parents to be singled out by Death Eaters.

Charlotte Skeoch plays Hannah in the movie version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and has a large part in one of the deleted scenes on the DVD. She reprises the role in the movie version of Goblet of Fire, though she only makes a cameo appearance. The character's name is incorrectly listed in the credits for Chamber of Secrets as "Hannah Hufflepuff"; this error is corrected in the credits for Goblet of Fire.

Susan Bones

Template:HP Character Susan Bones was mentioned in passing during the Sorting ceremony in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone; she is the same age as Harry and in Hufflepuff house. Her aunt was Amelia Bones, who was high-ranking member of the Ministry of Magic, before being killed by Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Susan joined the D.A., because she was curious to find out whether Harry Potter truly could produce a corporeal patronus, and was eager to learn how to do this herself. The Death Eater who murdered her Uncle Edgar and his family escaped from Azkaban and many students questioned her on this, in a sort of reflected fame. After this Death Eater's escape, she told Harry she understood how Harry felt, knowing the one who had killed his family was at large and constantly being asked questions about it.

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Susan splinched herself during an Apparition lesson. Her leg was successfully reattached, but the incident appeared to leave her somewhat shaken.

Susan wears her hair in a long plait down her back. In the first two films, Susan is played by Eleanor Columbus, the daughter of Director Chris Columbus, making her the only American actor to appear in the films as a student. Susan's half-blood parentage is tentatively known from the J. K. Rowling interview special "Harry Potter and Me", though it has not been confirmed in the actual books.

Eleanor Branstone

Template:HP Character Eleanor Branstone is a student three years younger than Harry. She was Sorted into Hufflepuff house in the fourth novel, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, between Slytherin Malcolm Baddock and fellow Hufflepuff Owen Cauldwell. Nothing else is known about her character and she has not been seen since.

Owen Cauldwell

Template:HP Character Owen Cauldwell is a student three years younger than Harry. He was Sorted into Hufflepuff in the fourth novel, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, between fellow Hufflepuff Eleanor Branstone and Gryffindor Dennis Creevey. He has not been seen since and nothing more is known about his character.

Justin Finch-Fletchley

Template:HP Character

Justin Finch-Fletchley is in the same year as Harry. A Muggle-born originally headed for Eton, he discovered he was a wizard at age 11. It is likely, based on his personality traits, his double-barrelled name, and his near-enrollment in an elite (and very expensive) private school like Eton, that he comes from a posh, upper-class family.

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Justin was threatened by a snake in the dueling club. Harry ordered the snake to relent by speaking Parsletounge, but Justin and other observers thought Harry was encouraging the snake to attack. Later, Justin was one of the Muggle-born students to become petrified by the basilisk along with Colin Creevey, Hermione Granger and Penelope Clearwater. In his fifth year Justin joined Dumbledore's Army.

Ernie Macmillan

Template:HP Character Ernie Macmillan is in the same year as Harry. Ernie was named as one of the prefects for Hufflepuff house in fifth year, and is often regarded as a potential Head Boy candidate in the future. He is described as "a stout boy", and he says that his family is descended from nine consecutive generations of pure-blood ancestry.

During Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Ernie suspected that Harry was the Heir of Slytherin, especially after Justin Finch-Fletchley was attacked. However, when Hermione Granger met the same fate, Ernie realised Harry was not responsible and apologised.

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Ernie wore a Support Cedric Diggory badge and again stopped speaking to Harry for a while, but they appear to have mended fences at some point after the First Task.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Ernie became a prefect. He was also among the few Hogwarts students who believed Harry's and Dumbledore's claims that Voldemort had returned, even going so far as to make a public declaration of support on Harry's behalf. Also in his fifth year he joined Dumbledore's Army, and was one of the students who came to Harry's aid on the Hogwarts Express at the end of the year. He dealt with the pressure of O.W.L. exams by studying anywhere from 8 to 10 hours per day, and for a while he developed an irritating habit of interrogating other people about their study habits. His hard work and determination paid off in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince; Ernie turns out to be the only Hufflepuff in the year who returned for N.E.W.T.-level Potions, indicating he must have gotten at least an "E" for 'Exceeds Expectations' (or possibly even "O" - 'Outstanding' - as he came to class prepared and with all the necessary equipment).

Harry describes Ernie as being pompous on occasion, and his behaviour has often been rather pretentious, but also as someone with whom he normally gets along very well. For his part, Ernie seems to have learned that Harry can be trusted; he thought the worst of Harry more than once in the earlier novels and was proven wrong each time, but throughout Order of the Phoenix he remains one of Harry's strongest supporters.

Louis Doyle reprises his role as Ernie Macmillan in the fourth movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire after appearing in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Laura Madley

Template:HP Character Laura Madley is a student three years younger than Harry. She was Sorted into Hufflepuff house in the fourth novel, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and has not been seen since. Nothing more is known about her character.

Zacharias Smith

Template:HP Character Zacharias Smith is a student at Hogwarts. He plays Chaser for the Hufflepuff Quidditch team. Harry vaguely recognises him from their last Quidditch match against each other, showing Zacharias had made his team at least by his third year, since Quidditch was cancelled in their fourth year.

He joins Dumbledore's Army in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but was vocally one of the most skeptical of that group about Harry's claims. His year is one below Harry. Hermione Granger later admits to Harry Potter and Ron Weasley that she only invited him because he overheard her talking with Ernie Macmillan and Hannah Abbott about joining, and that she doesn't like him much either. Later in the year, however, Zacharias was as eager for more D.A. lessons as the other members.

Fred and George Weasley never took a liking to him after his initial behaviour at the informational D.A. meeting at the Hog's Head. They jinxed him behind his back at the first D.A. meeting, and proclaimed that they didn't know if they'd be able to take it if Hufflepuff beat Gryffindor at Quidditch that year, which did in fact happen since they and Harry Potter had been banned from the team.

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, he commentates for some of the matches; However, his jeering at Gryffindor team is highly unpopular. He did manage to secure another victory against them, mainly because Harry was hit in the skull with a Beaters bat early in the game (courtesy of replacement Keeper Cormac McLaggen). He is not seen again in the book until the day after Dumbledore's death, where Zacharias was escorted from Hogwarts by his father, a man as haughty-looking as Zacharias himself is. Neither Smith stayed for the late Headmaster's funeral, implying that unlike his housemate Ernie and the rest of the Macmillan family, the Smiths were not supportive of Dumbledore or his policies.

Zacharias is generally believed to be in Harry's year; a glimpse of J.K. Rowling's character notes in the interview special "Harry Potter and Me" shows a name on the second page that looks like "Smith", which is usually assumed to be Zacharias. However, no first name can be seen, so in theory it could be a different Smith that has not been introduced.

It is debated whether or not Zacharias could be a descendant of Helga Hufflepuff. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince we meet a character named Hepzibah Smith, who claims to be a descendent of Helga Hufflepuff. If this is true it would explain the haughty attitude of Zacharias (and the Smiths in general), as descendants of a Hogwarts founder. Yet whether or not Hepizibah and Zacharias are related is unknown, seeing as 'Smith' is one of the most common last names in England (and much of the English-speaking world). However it is interesting to note that both Hepzibah and Zacharias Smith have Hebrew first names, perhaps indicating a family tradition.

Kevin Whitby

Template:HP Character Kevin Whitby is a student three years younger than Harry. He was the last student to be called at the Sorting in the fourth novel, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and was placed in Hufflepuff House after Orla Quirke was placed in Ravenclaw. Kevin has not been seen since and nothing more is known about his character.

Other

  • Rose Zeller (known only from The Sorting Hat)
  • Stebbins (seen as a Yule Ball attendee)
  • Summers
  • Summerby (Seeker for the Hufflepuff Quidditch team)
  • Cadwallader (Chaser for the Hufflepuff Quidditch team)

During a 2001 TV special called Harry Potter and Me, J.K. Rowling showed the camera an early notebook page listing some of the students in Harry's year. Each student's name was given, along with his/her gender, house, and parentage. These notes are not considered canon, as many of the characters have undergone significant changes from the notes to the books. For instance, Michael Corner and Anthony Goldstein are listed as Hufflepuffs in the notebook, but when they are introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, both of them are Ravenclaws; indeed, Anthony Goldstein is one of the Ravenclaw prefects.

There are several students from Harry's year who are mentioned in the notebook, but have not yet been introduced in the actual books. The Hufflepuffs are listed below for the sake of completeness, but some of their names and houses may change if/when they appear in the series proper.

  • Wayne Hopkins is listed as a male, half-blood Hufflepuff.
  • Megan Jones is listed as a female, half-blood Hufflepuff.
