Montgomery, Minnesota

Montgomery is a city located in Le Sueur County, Minnesota, 45 miles south of Minneapolis. Named after Richard Montgomery, an Irish-American soldier who served as a major general in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,794.

Community
This rural community can be characterized by its Czechoslovakian heritage, which it continues to proudly celebrate. The original settlement was by Czech and German immigrants who brought their traditions and customs to the rural landscape of the Montgomery area around 1856 - 1860. It is this Czechoslovakian heritage, which is celebrated each year at one of Minnesota’s oldest festivals – Kolacky Days.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 2,794 people, 1,105 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 691.5/km² (1,790.7/mi²). There were 1,137 housing units at an average density of 281.4/km² (728.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.59% White, 0.32% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 4.29% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 9.77% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,105 households out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% were non-families. 32.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.23.
In the city the population was spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $34,145, and the median income for a family was $48,011. Males had a median income of $30,707 versus $23,977 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,128. 11.6% of the population and 8.1% of families were below the poverty line. 13.6% of those under the age of 18 and 18.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
