New Paris is a village located in Preble County, Ohio. The Christmas carol "Up On The Rooftop" was written in New Paris, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,623.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²). 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.74% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,623 people, 692 households, and 446 families residing in the village. The population density was 882.6/km² (2,272.1/mi²). There were 744 housing units at an average density of 404.6/km² (1,041.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.01% White, 0.31% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.12% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 692 households out of which 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the village the population was spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $31,726, and the median income for a family was $36,402. Males had a median income of $27,870 versus $21,731 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,422. 10.1% of the population and 8.2% of families were below the poverty line. 18.8% of those under the age of 18 and 4.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
