Nirgrantha
From Free net encyclopedia
Nirgrantha is a Buddhist term meaning "Freed from all ties." Devotees, naked mendicants, are free from all ties, wander naked, and cover themselves with ashes. Mahāvīra (Mahavira), one of this sect, called Jñāti after his family, and also Nirgrantha-jñātiputra, was an opponent of Śākyamuni (Sakyamuni). His doctrines were determinist, everything being fated, and no religious practices could change one's lot.
