Norops is a proposed genus of lizards belonging to the anole family, Polychrotidae, which includes the 150 or so species commonly known as beta anoles. This designation was proposed by Guyer and Savage (1986), who split the genus Anolis into four. Cladistic analyses has confirmed that their proposed genera (including Norops) are all monophyletic, but their division of Anolis has not found wide support, and most scientific references to the beta anoles continues to place them in the larger genus.
