Nugaal

Nugaal is one of the smallest regions (gobolka) of Somalia. It is in the north east of the country, and its capital is Garoowe.

Nugaal is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, the Somalian regions of Sool to the west, Bari to the north and Mudug to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the east.

The region is central to the area claimed by the government of Puntland, which is seeking recognition as a federal government within a united Somalia.

A major geographic feature of the Nugaal region is the Nugaaleed Valley, a large shallow drainage basin, fed by the Nugaaleed and Dheere rivers during the April-June rainy season.

The main Somali clan family living in this region belongs to the Majeerteen (Darood). Its population is estimated to be 800,000.

In December 2004, Nugaal was within the region affected by the tsunami following the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake. (See Effect of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake on Somalia)
