Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh

From Free net encyclopedia

Ocean Terminal in Edinburgh, Scotland is a shopping centre, designed by Sir Terence Conran.

It is built on former industrial docklands on the north side of the city at the edge of the boundary between formerly separate ports of Newhaven and Leith. The entire area has undergone urban renewal and regeneration, much led by and on the lands in the ownership of, the Forth Ports Authority. The principal offices for the administration of the Scottish Executive, formerly the head office for the Scottish Office Civil Service staff, was moved to a new building in the Leith docks in stages between 1995-96. The building was officially opened by HM The Queen on 1 July 1996. The building was designed as a hastily-needed replacement to New St. Andrews House on James Craig Walk. This building was discovered to have asbestos embedded within its walls.

These and other developments have played key parts in the regeneration of Leith and the area was at one time considered as the location of the revived Scottish Parliament. The now decommissioned Royal Yacht Britannia, which is accessed via the Britannia Visitor Centre within the Terminal, in permanently berthed next to Ocean Terminal.

BHS and Debenhams are the Terminal's anchor stores, and there is also the usual selection of "high street" name shops, a variety of restaurants and bars, as well as a cinema.
