Settled by Mormon Pioneers in the winter of 1851, Parowan is the oldest city in southern Utah. Many original pioneer buildings and houses still stand and are still in use. Points of interest include pioneer museums and historic sites.
At the time of the pioneer's arrival, the area was inhabited by Southern Paiute Indians. The name Parowan is from the Southern Paiute language, and means "evil water." This name came about because of nearby Little Salt Lake.
Not far from town is the Parowan Gap petroglyph site. This passage through the hills made a convenient route for the Native Americans who, through the centuries, left many drawings on the canyon's rock walls.
