About the album

The set includes all four Velvet Underground albums from the Lou-era line-up--with the third (the self-titled The Velvet Underground) being presented in the original "closet mix" (so called because it sounds slightly muffled, like it was playing from a closet). A number of other rarities are also included: demo recordings and live performances, some of which were bootlegged, some of which were never released.

Rolling Stone journalist David Fricke provided extensive liner notes in an accompanying book, which also pictured many Velvets memorabilia from the collection of guitarist Sterling Morrison. Fricke also wrote the liner notes to Nirvana's eponymous greatest hits collection Nirvana about 7 years later.
