People to People was founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower during his administration, and 8 presidents have since served as Honorary Chairman. The current Honorary Chairman is George W. Bush.

A separate group that has licensed the name People to People Student Ambassadors travel overseas for 2–3 weeks in the summer to learn, share, and represent their communities and country. Student Ambassadors have to be nominated and then interviewed to become a member of a delegation. Becoming an ambassador gives them an appreciation for the world in which they live, builds their self-confidence, enriches education through learning in the global classroom, and develops increased levels of maturity and independence. Student Ambassador delegations of 30–40 students are led by educators in their communities during this dynamic and exciting program. The People to People Student Ambassador Program provides students a world of international opportunities. Leaders are nominated by previous People to People members and are usually teachers.

As well as traveling inside the U.S., there are programs that travel to other countries for all ages. Some of the countries visited include South Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Canada, China, England, Fiji, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malta, New Zealand, and Wales. One of the highlights of these international trips is the homestay. The homestay is for three nights in which 2 or more delegates are paired up and live in a local families home, to really see the culture of that area.
