Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights

From Free net encyclopedia

Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights is a British sitcom about The Phoenix Club, a working men's club in the northern English town of Bolton. The show is written by Neil Fitzmaurice, Peter Kay and Dave Spikey, produced by Goodnight Vienna Productions and Ovation Entertainments, and broadcast on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom. Two series have been produced, which were first broadcast in 2001 and 2002. The show won the People's Choice Award at the 2002 British Comedy Awards, and was nominated for several other awards.

The owner of The Phoenix Club is Brian Potter (played by Peter Kay), who from his wheelchair has presided over two clubs in the past: the first (the Aquarius flooded, the second (the Neptune) burned down. His ambition is to see The Phoenix Club become the most popular club in Bolton and thus outdo his arch nemesis, Den Perry (Ted Robbins). Perry is the mafia don of Clubland and the owner of rival club The Banana Grove.

Other characters include:

  • Ray Von (not Vaughn) (Neil Fitzmaurice) - The dangerously over-keen DJ, electrician and part time conman.
  • Jerry St Clair (Dave Spikey) - The licensee (in series two) and resident singer/entertainer (real name - Jerry Dignan). Won the 1992 Talent Trek. Never seems to realise that Brian is really the one in charge.
  • Max (Peter Kay) and Paddy (Patrick McGuinness) - The useless doormen. Paddy is confident and a hit with women(but balding), while Max is the more shy and introverted of the two.
  • Young Kenny (Justin Moorhouse) - The 'handyman'. Was left with his face permanently painted like a tiger in series 2.
  • Alan Johnson (Steve Edge) + Les (Toby Foster) - The backing band, Les Alanos.
  • Kenny Senior (Archie Kelly) - A notorious liar.
  • Holy Mary (Janice Connolly) and Marion (Bea Kelley) - The bar staff and cleaners.
  • Spencer (Daniel Kitson) - The gormless barman, who was hired in Series 2 just because the DSS would pay his wages and it wouldn't cost the Phoenix Club a penny.
  • Dodgy Eric (Bernard Wrigley) - Who delivered a bucking bronco, then a phallic bouncy castle.
  • Keith Lard (Peter Kay) - The over-zealous and corrupt fire safety officer with an unfortunate weakness for man's best friend. In fact, the character was also the bone of contention in a libel case with a real fire officer who had an uncannily similar name, Keith Laird. Laird sued alleging that the character was defamatory, as it depicted him taking backhanders from businesses in exchange for fire certificates. This was along with the bestiality allegations. However, Channel 4 had to broadcast an apology.
