Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,064 km² (411 mi²). 1,059 km² (409 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.46% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 38,940 people, 14,792 households, and 10,502 families residing in the county. The population density was 37/km² (95/mi²). There were 16,720 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (41/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 51.25% White, 47.53% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 14,792 households out of which 34.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.80% were married couples living together, 19.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.00% were non-families. 26.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the county the population was spread out with 27.70% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 88.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $24,562, and the median income for a family was $29,415. Males had a median income of $27,450 versus $17,405 for females. The per capita income for the county was $14,040. 25.30% of the population and 21.50% of families were below the poverty line. 35.50% of those under the age of 18 and 19.70% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
