Plitvice Lakes

The Plitvice Lakes are a national park in Croatia, situated at Template:Coor d. The river Korana has formed 20 lakes across the limestone and chalk barriers. Between the lakes there are many marvelous waterfalls and cascades. One of the last old-growth forests in Europe, it features an amazing ability to heal itself.
The lakes are divided into two major groups: Upper and Lower.
The larger upper lakes include:
- Prošćansko
- Ciginovac
- Okrugljak veliko
- Galovac
- Gradinsko
The bigger lower lakes are:
- Kozjak
- Milanovac
Croatia's Plitvice has been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 1979.
In Spring 1991, during the breakup of Yugoslavia, the park was the site of Plitvice Bloody Easter, the first armed confrontation to result in fatalities. As a result of war there are still some mines in small numbers around. <ref> [1]</ref>. The mine suspected contaminated area is 26 km2 in vicinity of Plitvice. <ref>[2]</ref>
