Point of Rocks, Maryland
From Free net encyclopedia
Image:Point of rocks 8501.jpg Point of Rocks is in Frederick County, Maryland. It is named for the striking rock formation it sits on top of, which is only visible from boats on the Potomac River, or from the southern bank of the river in Virginia. The rock formations are exposed by the river cutting through the ridge in a water gap, a typical formation in the Ridge-and-valley Appalachians.
Point of Rocks hosts a bridge over the Potomac River into Virginia on US-15. The next bridge crossing downstream is in Montgomery County at The American Legion Bridge on I-495. There is also a ferry called White's Ferry, that is located between them.
Point of Rocks is a stop on the MARC Brunswick Line.
Point of Rocks has frequently been observed by Duke Energy for a power plant to be built within its "limits". As of November 26th, 2002, however, Duke officially cancelled its bid on building a plant in Point of Rocks. A group formed in response to Duke's official bid called "Point of Rocks against Power Plants." See their website here: http://www.pointofrocksagainstpowerplants.com/index.html
Point of Rocks is currently going through a many-phase building called Canal Run. Canal Run is a site from a section of Ballenger Creek Pike to Maryland Route 28. This land was acquired near 2000, and is currently being built upon by Drees Homes (who bought out Ausherman Homes, Marvin Aushermanstill owns Ausherman Development). Phase one of this community was completed in 2005. There are 5 more phases left. The second phase of building will be starting early 2006. Point of Rocks is a very desirable location as there is very little land available in Frederick County, Maryland. Because of its location, prices are still considerably lower than other areas of Maryland and the DC metro area.
