Port Austin, Michigan

Port Austin is a village in Huron County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 737. The village is within Port Austin Township.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 737 people, 370 households, and 206 families residing in the village. The population density was 284.6/km² (733.7/mi²). There were 622 housing units at an average density of 240.2/km² (619.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.96% White, 0.27% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 370 households out of which 16.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.9% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.3% were non-families. 41.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.94 and the average family size was 2.58.

In the village the population was spread out with 15.5% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 17.9% from 25 to 44, 31.6% from 45 to 64, and 30.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 52 years. For every 100 females there were 79.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $29,643, and the median income for a family was $38,000. Males had a median income of $26,875 versus $23,750 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,480. 14.3% of the population and 12.2% of families were below the poverty line. 15.3% of those under the age of 18 and 16.4% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
