Project Steve
From Free net encyclopedia
Named in honor of the paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould, Project Steve is a parody by the National Center for Science Education (NCSE) of creationist lists of scientists who "doubt evolution". The NCSE's list only contains scientists named Stephen or variations thereof (Stephanie, Stefan, Esteban, etc.), thus representing about 1% of the total population. Despite this restriction, it is longer and contains more eminent scientists than any creationist list, including Stephen Hawking as well as both Nobel Prize winning Steves in science, Steven Chu and Steven Weinberg. The Steve-o-meter reads 733 Steves as of April 14 2006.
The signed statement reads:
Evolution is a vital, well-supported, unifying principle of the biological sciences, and the scientific evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of the idea that all living things share a common ancestry. Although there are legitimate debates about the patterns and processes of evolution, there is no serious scientific doubt that evolution occurred or that natural selection is a major mechanism in its occurrence. It is scientifically inappropriate and pedagogically irresponsible for creationist pseudoscience, including but not limited to "intelligent design," to be introduced into the science curricula of our nation's public schools.
The NCSE also produces a T-shirt which includes in large letters: "Over _00 Scientists named Steve Agree, Teach Evolution!" where the blank contains the most recent hundreds mark.
