The word propagation can mean:
- Multiplication or increase, as by natural reproduction. In artificial reproduction see propagation of schema.
- Copying and distributing free software in a manner explicitly permitted under the applicable license
- In genetics, propagation is another term for the elongation part of transcription.
- In agriculture and horticulture, propagation is the production of increased numbers of plants, by seeds, cuttings, grafting or other methods.
- In religion, propagation is a term often used for winning new converts to the particular religion.
- In physics, propagation is the motion of waves through or along a medium.
- In chemistry, propagation describes the catalytically-driven process of polymer elongation.
- In Psychological Operations, propagation is some degree of success in the spread of propaganda.
- In digital circuits, propagation delay is the time between input and output of logic gates.
- In the DNS, propagation refers to the automatic retrieval of DNS zone files from a domain's nameservers.
Note: For electromagnetic waves, propagation may occur in a vacuum as well as in a material transmission medium.
