Quake series

The Quake series is a line of first person shooter computer and video games produced by id Software.

Overview

The series is somewhat unusual in that its focus changes frequently; Quake II has nothing to do with Quake [1], and Quake III Arena has little to do with its predecessors, as well. This is mostly due to the fact that Quake II was originally supposed to be an entirely different franchise ("Quake II" was a tentative title), a plan which was shot down when most of the names id Software had tried to use instead were already taken.

Quake [1] involves a marine travelling through alternate dimensions to prevent a demon invasion from occurring; Quake II involves an assault on an alien planet as retribution for them attacking Earth, which is entirely unrelated to its predecessor. Most of the subsequent entries in the Quake franchise follow Quake II, not Quake [1].

Games

Quake

Image:Quakelogo.gif Template:Main The first game in the series, Quake was released on May 31, 1996 for the personal computer. It advanced the 3D game genre by using 3-dimensional models instead of sprites. It was ported to various consoles.

Quake II

Image:Quake2logo.gif Template:Main Quake II was released on November 30, 1997. Quake II is only similar to Quake[1] in name only, and introduces many new things to the Quake universe. It was ported to the PlayStation and Nintendo 64, but with noticeable differences.

Quake III Arena

Image:Quake3logo.gif Template:Main Quake III Arena, released on December 2, 1999, is strictly a multiplayer game. However, it can be played in a single player mode with bots. The Quake III engine was used in many popular games, such as Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Call of Duty. It was ported to the Sega Dreamcast and PlayStation 2.

Quake 4

Image:Quake4logo.gif Template:Main Quake 4 was developed by Raven Software and released on October 18, 2005 for the PC and November 18 for the Xbox 360 in North America. It is based on the Doom 3 engine, and not a new engine developed for the game. Quake 4 is focused more on single player and takes place story-wise after Quake II. It's multiplayer is based heavily off of Quake III, and includes the Quad damage pickup and rocketjumping from the previous games.

Quake Mobile

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

Image:Quakewarslogo.jpg Template:Main Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a follow-up to Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, being developed by Splash Damage. It also uses the Doom 3 engine, for a release sometime in 2006.
