In the fictional Star Wars universe, Quinlan Vos is a near-human Kiffar Jedi Knight hailing originally from the planet Kiffex. He has long, dreadlock-like hair and a band of pale yellow across his upper face. He is gifted with psychometric powers, which allow him to read "memories" from inanimate objects through physical contact. He was a student under Qui-Gon Jinn for a time (As his lightsaber design demonstrates - Quinlan's lightsaber looks nearly identical to Jinn's and the blade color is the same.) Quinlan finished his training as a Jedi under Jedi Master Tholme. He later trained Aayla Secura as his own Padawan. Quinlan has a long history of struggle with the dark side of the Force, particularly after sustaining permanent amnesia due to an overdose of an illegal drug administered by an enemy. When Quinlan Vos was young, his parents were killed by the vampiric Anzati. Later on the planet Kiffex, Secura became entranced by an ancient Anzati Dark Jedi. After the battle of Geonosis, Vos left the jedi order and joined the separatists. Aayla, heartbroken and angered decided to search for him. However, Master Tholme would not allow it.

Origins

He has memory loss in the episode "Twilight". He frees Aayla Secura and slays Volfe Karkko in "Darkness".

Clone Wars

Quinlan played a major part in the Clone Wars by infiltrating Count Dooku's Inner Circle and giving information to the Jedi. He was led back to the dark side by Count Dooku, who revealed to Vos through his psychometric powers that his great-aunt was responsible for his parent's deaths by betraying them to the vampiric Anzati. Vos slew his aunt on his homeworld and was accepted fully into Dooku's command and shortly worked as a triple agent against the Republic, until his true colors were shown when he assassinated a corrupt Republic Senator, Viento, on the belief he was Sith, battling K'Kruck and injuring him in the process. In the end, however, it turned out that Vos had been loyal to the Republic all along, although in order to completely infiltrate Dooku's Inner Circle he had to fool even those on the Republic's side into thinking that he was allied with Dooku, and committed many evil deeds in the process. During the Battle of Saleucami, Vos revealed his true loyalties, overcoming Dooku's temptations to truly turn him to the dark side and killing the Dark Jedi Sora Bulq. Vos believed that Darth Maul and Dooku were apprentices to the true Dark Lord of the Sith, and it was this master-Sith Lord who was responsible for the Clone Wars, and believed if he could uncover the identity of this Sith Lord, and slew him, he would end the Clone Wars, and atone for his misdeeds.

Shortly afterward, Quinlan's lover Khaleen revealed that she was pregnant. Quinlan told Khaleen to go to the far edges of the galaxy where she and their unborn child would be safe, and promised that once the Clone Wars were over he would leave the Jedi Order and find her. This revelation sets up the possibility of a powerfully Force Sensitive offsping. It is likely that the story of Quinlan and Khaleen's child will be told at some point in the future, either through comic books, novels, or perhaps even the Star Wars TV series that George Lucas is planning.

Returning to the Republic, Vos was given command of a battalion of Clonetroopers, and moved his troops to Boz Pity. This is mentioned by Obi-Wan Kenobi in Revenge of the Sith when news of the events concerning the Clone Wars is heard at the Jedi Temple. In the comic book novelization of Episode III, Quinlan Vos is on Kashyyyk riding on top of a Clone Turbo Tank when Supreme Chancellor Palpatine issues Order 66 to the Clonetroopers throughout the galaxy, causing them to turn on their Jedi Generals. Another tank fires at the one Quinlan is riding on, and Quinlan is presumably killed in the fire. Lucas planned to have this scene appear in the movie, but never got around to filming it.

Quinlan Vos escaped into the woods of Kashyyyk, eluding the clone troopers. He clung to his training as a Jedi through his pain, using lessons taught by Yoda, Mace Windu, and Count Dooku to overcome his clone opponents. He was eventually tracked by Captain Fei, who told Quinlan that if he didn't come out of hiding, Fei would call in an airstrike and kill himself, Quinlan, and the neighboring Wookie village. Quinlan made up his mind that he cannot run and hide, and that he will never track down the second Sith Lord. His destiny is to stop Fei and protect the innocent Wookiees. Quinlan jumped from his perch, lightsaber in hand, and Fei shot him in the stomach with his blaster rifle.

Villie soon came looking for Quinlan and found him on the ground, the dead Fei a few feet away. Soon after this, a squad of clone troopers came through the woods, and found Villie burning Quinlan's body. Villie claims to have killed the Jedi himself. As the clone troopers leave, Villie says under his breath, "All debts paid, Jedi."

In a cave on Kashyyyk, Khaleen Hentz and her baby had met up with Master Tholme and Master T'ra Saa, along with some Wookies. Khaleen was watching a holocube from Vos, explaining his feelings for her, when suddenly he walked in, and told her himself. She had feared that he was dead, as had they all, but due to Villie's trickery (he had burned Fei's body instead), Quinlan had snuck off-planet and been healed. Khaleen falls into his arms, then presents their child to Quinlan. Quinlan paints the child's face with the same markings as his own, and proclaims to the baby that he will be raised in the Light, and the Darkness will never touch him.

Ghost

Quinlan Vos briefly appeared in Ghost, which took place about 10 years before the Battle of Yavin. A teenage Han Solo was looking for a map, met an individual he did not recognize, bounty hunters appeared, and Han was pushed into a Sarlaac, when Vos used his Force-powers to rescue him. Vos looked considerably older and war-scarred when Solo encountered him. It appears that this story takes place between episode 3 and 4, during the the Great Jedi Purge.

Trivia

Quinlan Vos was actually a Jedi Master, having been promoted in the graphic novel Rite Of Passage. He was elevated to Master at the same time as his Padawan Aayla Secura became a Jedi Knight. In addition to his Jedi training, Count Dooku and Sora Bulq trained Vos in Sith force powers. According to Jan Duursema, his primary fighting style is form IV, Ataru, with some training in Form III from Dooku, and form VII, Vaapad, from Sora Bulq.

The name "Quinlan" is both an Irish male first name and a surname (last name). While not a common first name these days, it is still a popular surname since the Quinlan family line still continues. Its origins are Gaelic and it means "fit" and "strong" in the context of "well-shaped" and "athletic". Quinlan Vos is drawn as a highly muscled human-looking male. The word vos has could have several origins. For instance, vos, derived from voseo, is used as a second person pronoun in serveral dialects of Spanish. It's used in place of "tú". Argentina is probably the largest country to use this "vos" form of Spanish. However, in regard to surnames, there is an Irish as well as a Dutch (derived from German) origin. For the Dutch, the Vos' were believed to be first found in Holland where they emerged as a notable family early in the Middle Ages in Amsterdam. Vos comes from the Frisian name "Fos." Fos comes from Old German given names that start with Folk, like Folkmar. Folk means "people" or "war people". 'vos' is also the Dutch word for fox.

He will be played in the Star Wars live-action TV series by Matthew Newton.
