Ram FM is an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting to Derby and surrounding areas including Burton-upon-Trent and Matlock on 102.8 FM.
History
The station began life as the Derby service of Radio Trent, although the Trent does not flow through Derby itself (Rolls Royce have since named a very successful engine after the river).
The original name was Radio Trent 945, as it used to broadcast on 945MW. The station was then owned by Midlands Radio plc. In October 1988, the station's MW frequency combined with Radio Trent's and Leicester Sound's to form GEM AM, a classic hits station, which has since been sold to the UBC media group, and renamed Classic Gold GEM. The FM frequency continued with its pop music format.
In February 1994, Midlands Radio was bought, like many radio stations at that time, by GWR. Soon after, Radio Trent's Nottingham service on 96.2FM and 96.5FM was renamed 96 Trent FM, while the Derby service on 102.8FM was called Ram FM, after a vote on the name was held in the local press.
Current details
The station is owned by the GCap Media group. The music policy includes current hits, and music from the 1980s and 1990s. The station's studios are based at Iron Gate in Derby, although some off-peak programming is networked from studios in Bristol and London. The breakfast programme is presented by Dean Weatherbed and Pete Allen, while Graham Torrington broadcasts from 10pm - 1am on weekdays with his Late Night Love.
The transmitter is situated at Drum Hill, five miles north of Derby near Little Eaton, and is also used by Radio Derby.
