This is the current IETF specification for Transport Layer Security (TLS). The background and motivation is also described. A supplemental specification provides a set of extensions that preserve interoperability with unextended clients and servers:

The specifications are comprehensive, providing useful references for digging deeper. Individual RFCs are never altered once published and may have been supplanted.
