Randolph Air Force Base

From Free net encyclopedia

Randolph Air Force Base (Randolph AFB) is a base of the United States Air Force located in Bexar County, Texas near San Antonio. Randolph AFB was dedicated in June 20, 1930 as a flying training base and continues in that mission today. It serves as headquarters of the U.S. Air Force Air Education and Training Command. It is known as "the Showplace of the Air Force" because of its Spanish Colonial Revival Style architecture, in which every building, even the hangars, are built.

History

The idea for Randolph began in 1926, when the Air Corps decided an additional training field was needed, and a site north of San Antonio was chosen for a new field. The base was named after Captain William Millican Randolph who crashed his T-4 on takeoff in 1928. Since its beginning, Randolph has been a flying training base. Pilots were trained in the primary phase of flying, and returned for instructor training or combat crew training.

Randolph Field was officially renamed Randolph Air Force Base on Jan. 13, 1948 after the Air Force became a separate service.
