Ranier is a city located in Koochiching County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 188. It is a suburb of International Falls.
Ranier is the fictional home site of Rocket J. Squirrel (better known as Rocky the Flying Squirrel). The house used as a model is located on River Street in Ranier.

Geography
Image:MNMap-doton-Ranier.png According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²). 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. Ranier is located at the mouth of Rainy River, at the western end of Rainy Lake. Ranier is just 8 nautical miles, and 10 road miles, from Voyageurs National Park. A city boat ramp and dock allow boaters to access Rainy Lake and River.
History
The 98-acre village of Ranier was established in 1908 on a 50,000-foot stretch of shoreline that straddles the point where Rainy Lake gives birth to Rainy River. The town site was platted by a Duluth, Minnesota corporation as a port of entry for international rail traffic.
During the Prohibition era, Ranier was home to bootleggers, who smuggled whiskey across the oldest cantilevered bridge in the world, which links Canada and the United States. The 96 year-old bridge is still a vital link at this port of entry, the largest bulk rail port in the United States.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 188 people, 76 households, and 50 families residing in the city. The population density was 483.9/km² (1,268.1/mi²). There were 88 housing units at an average density of 226.5/km² (593.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.87% White, 0.00% African American, 1.06% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 76 households out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were married couples living together, 3.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% were non-families. 27.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.78.
In the city the population was spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 3.7% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $39,375, and the median income for a family was $49,375. Males had a median income of $50,875 versus $25,833 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,784. 0.0% of the population and 0.0% of families were below the poverty line.
