The term R.A.N.T.S. array is an acronym for Redundant Array of NT Servers. It is a parody on RAID array, which stands for Redundant array of Independent Drives, a common failsafe procedure for a network of servers.
The R.A.N.T.S. array has become the butt of jokes, due to the high failure rate of this Microsoft product. In the web-based comic strip User Friendly, the R.A.N.T.S. array is displayed as a set of four Windows NT servers, two of which are spewing smoke, with a man kneeling in front of them and praying desperately for the others' survival. The humor in this comic comes out of the standing joke of the general instability of Microsoft products.
