Ray Liotta (born Raymond Julian Vicimarli on December 18, 1954) is an American actor. He is well known for his roles in Field of Dreams, Goodfellas, Cop Land, and Blow.

Liotta was born in Newark, New Jersey of "mostly Scottish with a bit of Italian descent" [1], and was adopted six months later by Alfred Liotta, the president of a local Democratic club, and Mary, an appointed township clerk. Both of his parents unsuccessfully ran for local office. His name was changed to Liotta after being adopted.

He also has provided the voice of Tommy Vercetti, the video game protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

In 2005, Liotta had a memorable guest appearance on the television drama ER playing Charlie Metcalf in the episode Time of Death. The role earned him an Emmy for "Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series."

One of his earliest roles was as Joey Perrini in the daytime program Another World.

Liotta studied acting at the University of Miami where he performed in the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre.

In Field of Dreams, Liotta played the left-handed hitting Shoeless Joe Jackson. Because Liotta himself is a right-handed hitter, the character appears as a right-handed hitter in the film.

From Goodfellas:

  • "And when the cops, they assigned a whole army to stop Jimmy, what'd he do? He made them partners."
  • "When they found Carbone in the meat truck, he was frozen so stiff it took them three days to thaw him out for the autopsy."
  • "For a second, I thought I was dead. But when I heard all the noise, I knew they were cops. Only cops talk that way. If they'd been wiseguys, I wouldn't have heard a thing. I would've been dead."
