Roar

A roar is the deep cry—sometimes expressing anger, aggression, or pain—of a wild animal. Roar may also describe any loud, rumbling din.

Some species of cats -- the larger ones -- make a sound called a roar. It appears to be a warning, challenge, and calling sound used for territorial patroling (i.e., 'this is my territory' or 'back off, I'm fierce' or 'come to me, good-looking'). It is likely that there are nuances of roaring that humans don't fully understand. The mechanism is not fully understood.

The exact sound varies with the cat species and the situation. In the largest cats it can be very loud indeed.

Cats that roar (lions, leopards, jaguars, and tigers) cannot purr, and cats that purr cannot roar.
