Robert Stevenson (lighthouse engineer)

Robert Stevenson (8 June 17721850) was a Scottish lighthouse engineer and stepson of Thomas Smith, also a lighthouse engineer.

In 1786 Stevenson was apprenticed to a gunsmith and then to Thomas Smith. Stevenson's mother Jane married Smith in 1792. Stevenson became a partner in Smith's business in 1800.

Stevenson had three sons who all became engineers: David, Alan, and Thomas. Robert Louis Stevenson was the son of Thomas.

Stevenson College, Edinburgh was founded in 1970, and was named after Robert Stevenson. For at least some of his life Robert Stevenson lived at 1 Baxter's Place, Edinburgh; a building that is now called Robert Stevenson House in his memory.
