Rogue Squadron

For the video game series, see Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.

Image:Roguelogo1.png Rogue Squadron is an elite X-wing starfighter squadron in the fictional Star Wars universe. The squadron is famous for achieving seemingly impossible missions. They were at the Battle of Yavin even before being formed, and were instrumental in the Battle of Hoth and the Battle of Endor.

The comic series by Michael A. Stackpole and Dark Horse Comics tells of the first reformation of the squadron after Endor.

The book series, also by Stackpole, tells of the squadron's second reformation, two years after Endor, and details the capture of Coruscant. The titles in that series are Rogue Squadron, Wedge's Gamble, The Krytos Trap and The Bacta War. Corran Horn, one of Rogue Squadron's pilots, is the subject of I, Jedi, another longer book by Stackpole.

The X-wing series, continued by Aaron Allston, also follows Wraith Squadron, a squad formed after the Bacta War by Wedge Antilles which worked closely with the Rogues.

Stackpole returned to the series with Isard's Revenge, and Allston ended it with Starfighters of Adumar, a novel about Antilles and his closest compatriots, Tycho Celchu, Wes Janson, and Hobbie Klivian.

Years later, under the command of Gavin Darklighter, the Rogues were involved in the war against the Yuuzhan Vong.

There are also four video games developed by Factor 5 and published by LucasArts: Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, for the Nintendo 64, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D for PC, Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader, and Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike, both for the Nintendo GameCube.

History

Red Squadron was essential to the destruction of the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin. After the battle, the squadron would operate as two groups. The first was the Renegade Flight under Narra, the squadron leader, and the second was the Rogue Flight under Luke Skywalker. As the Rogues became more autonomous, they became a group with no standing orders, ready any time or place for urgent missions that would arise. Their core was Luke Skywalker, Wedge Antilles, Zev Senesca, and Wes Janson.

The Renegade Flight was eventually destroyed before the Battle of Hoth, on an escort mission with a convoy carrying supplies for the Rebel Base. The Rogues on Hoth had now the burden to defend Echo Base although new pilots were already added to their roster, like Derek Klivian and Tycho Celchu. During the Battle of Hoth, the Rogues had to add many "guest" members into their squadron. The twelve Snowspeeders of the Rogues gave the Rebels enough time to evacuate Echo Base.

After the evacuation of Hoth, Antilles took command during the absence of Skywalker at Dagobah. After the events of The Empire Strikes Back, Skywalker and Antilles formed a squadron of twelve units around the core group and the Rogue Squadron was formed. Antilles often commanded the squadron when Luke had important off-flight missions. One of Luke's last missions was the Battle of Gall against the Imperials, in an attempt to flush out the bounty hunters who had abducted Han Solo.

During the Battle of Endor, Rogue Squadron was dissolved and absorbed into the general fleet and Antilles took the role of Red Leader, in memory of the Battle of Yavin. After that, the squadron was hastily and temporarily reformed by Antilles with the best rebel pilots in order to defend the planet Bakura. The Rogue Squadron was now a lean team of six units: Antilles, Janson, Klivian, Celchu, Plourr Ilo and Dllr Nep. One of the important missions during the New Republic's infancy was the failed rescue mission for Sate Pestage, which bolstered the fame of New Republic.

Since Janson and Klivian moved on to train new pilots and squadrons, Antilles had to reinvent Rogue Squadron, now with pilots from a wide variety of planets, clearly for political reasons. This "new" Rogue Squadron cut its teeth on Imperial forces led by Ysanne Isard, contributed heavily to the liberation of Coruscant and fought in the Bacta War, after resigning from the Alliance military, to retake the world of Thyferra from Isard.

During that time, Klivian led a temporary Rogue Squadron in the absence of the "true" Rogue Squadron. Upon their return from Thyferra, Antilles turned command over to Tycho Celchu and founded the Wraith Squadron. Antilles commanded both squadrons against Warlord Zsinj and after that he returned to his command as Rogue Leader to battle against Thrawn, Krennel, Palpatine's clones and lead the team to other glorious battles.

Notable pilots

Wedge Antilles
Originally Red Two at the Battle of Yavin, Antilles fought as Rogue Three in Rogue Flight. He eventually went on to command Rogue Squadron. Wedge joined the Rebellion when he was seventeen, after the deaths of his parents. He flew against the first Death Star, a battle in which he uttered the immortal words "Look at the size of that thing!" Shortly after this battle, he founded Rogue Squadron with Luke Skywalker. Later, he led an assault group against the second Death Star. Ten years after the Battle of Yavin, he grudgingly accepted a promotion to the rank of general.
Tycho Celchu
Tycho Celchu was Rogue Five in Rogue Flight. A human male from Alderaan, Celchu is the son of an Alderaanian HoloNet magnate, and the brother of Skoloc and Mia Celchu. He joined the Imperial Navy, where he trained under Soontir Fel, and alongside future Rogues Hobbie Klivian and Biggs Darklighter. On his 21st birthday, he was speaking to his family on Alderaan when the connection suddenly disappeared. Later, he learned that that was the moment when the Death Star destroyed the planet, killing all its inhabitants.
Tycho defected to the Rebel Alliance and was present when the Empire attacked their base on Hoth. He rescued Hobbie Klivian when his snowspeeder was damaged during the evacuation. Tycho joined Rogue Squadron and flew an A-wing at the Battle of Endor. Tycho followed Lando and Wedge into the Death Star tunnel, and broke off when ordered to do so by Lando to draw off some of the Imperial pursuit. It is at this point that he was seen in Return of the Jedi. After the turning point at Endor, Tycho distinguished himself in many battles, proving his loyalty both to the Alliance and to his friends.
Biggs Darklighter
Biggs Darklighter fought at the Battle of Yavin as Red Three. He died attacking the first Death Star.
Gavin Darklighter
Gavin Darklighter (born 10 BBY) is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe, created by Michael Stackpole in his series of X-wing novels.
Darklighter is a human male from Tatooine. The younger cousin of Red Squadron pilot Biggs Darklighter, Gavin joined the Rogues at the age of 16, under the command of Wedge Antilles. Despite his youth, Gavin quickly distinguished himself during the conquest of Coruscant and the liberation of Thyferra. He won the affection of Bothan pilot Asyr Sei'lar and the two were a couple for several years, despite disapproval from many Bothans, especially Bothan senator Borsk Fey'lya. The couple planned to adopt children, but were unable to, due to Asyr's disappearance under mysterious circumstances.
He later married human female Sera Faleur, and, after the retirement of Rogue veterans Antilles and Tycho Celchu, became the commander of Rogue Squadron. Gavin served both the New Republic and the Galactic Alliance during the war with the Yuuzhan Vong, and following that conflict still remained in service to the Alliance.
Erisi Dlarit
Eris Dlarit was a beautiful human from the planet Thyferra, who eventually turned out to be an Imperial spy. She was killed by Corran Horn.
Garven "Dave" Dreis
Garven "Dave" Dreis was the first commander of Rogue Squadron's predecessor, Red Squadron, and thus is often referred to as Red Leader.
Corran Horn
Corran Horn was a security officer with Corellian Security (CorSec) who eventually joined the Rebellion and learned of his powerful Jedi heritage.
About two years after leaving Corellia, Corran Horn joined Rogue Squadron. He did well enough during training that he was promoted to lieutenant and given command of the squadron's Three Flight. Corran's callsign was Rogue Nine. He excelled in a number of early missions. He was instrumental in the taking of the planet Borleias, which opened the way for the invasion of Coruscant.
During an early Rogue Squadron mission, Corran encountered Mirax Terrik, the friend of his Commanding Officer, Wedge Antilles, and daughter of smuggler Booster Terrik. Because Hal Horn had once arrested Booster and sent him to Kessel for five years, early animosity existed between the Horns and the Terriks. However, over time, Corran and Mirax fell in love and eventually married. He eventualy left Rogue Squadron and became a Jedi.
Bror Jace
Bror Jace first appeared in the novel Rogue Squadron, the first volume of Michael A. Stackpole's X-wing series. Jace was one of the pilots Commander Wedge Antilles recruited when he reformed Rogue Squadron. His family ran the Zaltin Corporation on Thyferra. He is the best of the new recruits, surpassing rival Corran Horn in flight and kill rate. At the end of Rogue Squadron, he is apparently ambushed and killed by the Interdictor Cruiser Black Asp while returning home to visit a dying relative.
The Bacta War, the fourth novel in the X-wing series, reveals that he faked his death in order to return home undetected. While on Thyferra, he helps organize an anti-Isard rebel movement. Once Rogue Squadron defeats Isard and liberates Thyferra, he stays behind to help form the Thyferra Aerospace Defense.

Wes Janson
Wes Janson was Wedge Antilles' gunner at the Battle of Hoth, and along with Wedge, he scored the first kill of an AT-AT walker with a terse "Cable detached!" (one of his only speaking lines in the film). He later went on to become part of Rogue Squadron, one of the Rebel Alliance's (and later the New Republic's) most elite fighter squadrons. He was regarded as the joker of the group. He later went on to found the volunteer squadron called the Taanab Yellow Aces, a tribute to the Tierfon Yellow Aces, the squadron where he and fellow Red Squadron member Jek Porkins served in the early days of the Alliance. Janson's first kill was a friendly, Kissek Doran, father of Wraith pilot Kell Tainer.
Wes Janson was also involved in the war against the Yuuzhon Vong in the New Jedi Order series, joining his former commanding officer, Wedge Antilles, on Borleias, just before the Battle of Borleais. He refuses to join the Rogues, temporarily, out of loyalty to the volunteer squadron he has brought. He unknowingly flirts with Jaina Solo. Janson is known as the joker of Rogue Squadron, and later Wraith Squadron. One of his most elaborate pranks involved an Ewok doll nicknamed Lieutenant Kettch.
He eventually rose to the rank of major.

Derek "Hobbie" Klivian
Derek "Hobbie" Klivian fought as Rogue Four at the Battle of Hoth. He is a native of the planet Ralltiir. Not much is known about his past before he served with Biggs Darklighter aboard the Rand Ecliptic and participated in a mass-defection that occurred in the months leading up to the Battle of Yavin. Hobbie was later assigned to Rogue Squadron as Rogue Four. He was given the nickname of Bugbite by Iella Wessiri, a reference to their first meeting on Corellia where Hobbie was stung by a local insect.
Hobbie makes an appearance in The Empire Strikes Back as Luke's wingman on Hoth. Originally doomed to die when his snowspeeder crashes into General Veers walker, his life was spared after that scene from the fourth draft was cut. He is also known for his incredulous line "Two fighters against a Star Destroyer?" when Leia is addressing the pilots at the start of the movie.
Hobbie is close friends with Wes Janson and the two have served time training squadrons of new pilots together.
He currently holds the record for being downed without injury.
Doran Kruton
Kruton first appears in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. He was a Rebel since the earliest days of the Rebellion. Kruton was essential in the defense of Naboo, which in the end failed. After that conflict, he moved to Alderaan. When the plans for the first Death Star were stolen, Kruton was key to the escape of the Rebel agents. He flew at the Battle of Yavin, but after being damaged by a turbolaser, he had to fly off and return to base. During the time of the Battle of Hoth, Kruton was off in the Outer Rim fighting Imperial forces. Kruton was a leading pilot at the Battle of Endor. He fired the shots that destroyed one of the Imperial Star Destroyers.

Kasan Moor
Kasan Moor was Rogue Nine in Rogue Flight. She is one of the elite pilots for Rogue Squadron in the videogame Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. She joined Rogue Squadron after defection at Gerrard V. She apparently decided to defect following the destruction of Alderaan (her home planet) by the Empire. Using her detailed knowledge, Rogue Squadron led several successful missions against the Empire and cemented the reputation of Rogue Squadron as an elite part of the Alliance. Before her defection, Kasan was an orphan raised to be a pilot for the Empire (despite the fact her parents were members of the Rebel Alliance). She rose to the rank of commander of 128th TIE Interceptor Squadron, which Wedge refers to as "the Best of the Best" (although in the X-wing series of novels he actually refers to the 181st TIE Interceptor Squadron as the best TIE interceptor squadron).
She is not confirmed to exist in any of the Star Wars sources. She is not a part of the original Rogue Squadron.
Jek Porkins
Jek Porkins fought as Red Six at the Battle of Yavin. He died in the attack on the first Death Star.
Ooryl Qrygg
Ooryl Qrygg is a member of the Gand species, and the wingmate of Corran Horn. He is one of the longest-serving pilots in the squadron, and always carries the designation Rogue Ten.
Dack Ralter
Dack Ralter was Luke Skywalker's harpoon gunner at the Battle of Hoth.
Dash Rendar
Dash Rendar, a Corellian smuggler, briefly flew in Rogue Flight as Rogue Twelve.
Asyr Sei'lar
Asyr Sei'lar, a Bothan, was located on Coruscant during Rogue Squadron's efforts to capture the world. She assisted in their efforts, and was later accepted into the squadron. She fell in love with Gavin Darklighter, and would have settled down with him if not for interference from Borsk Fey'lya. She disppeared during an action at Distna and was reported dead.

Zev Senesca
Zev Senesca fought as Rogue Two at the Battle of Hoth. He was the snowspeeder pilot who discovered Luke Skywalker and Han Solo after they were lost far from Echo Base on the planet Hoth. He was killed by a blast from an Imperial AT-AT during the Battle of Hoth. He was described as a much older pilot than the rest of his squadron. He is also noted as a veteran pilot with over 48 kills.
Luke Skywalker
Luke Skywalker first fought in Red Squadron as Red Five at the Battle of Yavin. He founded Rogue Squadron, and went on to command Rogue Squadron prior to Antilles. He flew with the squadron until he resigned his commission to reform the Jedi Order. He later trained fellow Rogue Squadron pilot Corran Horn in the arts of the Jedi.
Nawara Ven
Nawara Ven is a Twi'lek, and a lawyer as well as being a pilot. He defended Tycho Celchu when the latter was put on trial for murder. An injury which cost him his leg forced Ven to take on an administrative role within the squadron, and eventually led to his departure.es:Rogue squadron
