Roskilde University (Danish: Roskilde Universitetscenter, RUC) is a Danish state university founded in 1972 in Roskilde. This modern university awards bachelor and master degrees as well as Ph.D. degrees.
Faculties
Roskilde University has 10 faculties (institutes) specializing in very different areas from Mathematics to International Development:
- Faculty for Biology and Chemistry
- Faculty for Mathematics and Physics
- Faculty for Geography and International development
- Faculty for Environment, Technology and Society
- Faculty for History
- Faculty for Language and Culture
- Faculty for Communication, Journalism and Computer Science
- Faculty for Political Science and Business
- Faculty for Psychology and Philosophy/Science Theory
- Faculty for Education
- CELI, RUC's center for women's rights.
History
In the 1970s the university was known for its very liberal education as opposed to the usual lectures provided by the more traditional universities of Copenhagen and Århus.
Today the university is not as liberal as in the 1970s; however, it is still one of the most modern universities giving the students more influence on the planning of the teaching than most other Danish universities.
