Rotunda (architecture)

A rotunda is a term frequently applied to any large round building, often covered by a dome. It can also refer to a round room within a building (a famous example being within the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.). The Pantheon in Rome is a famous rotunda. Several cities have buildings referred to as "the Rotunda," among them:

• The Church of the Rotonda in Thessaloniki, built as the "Tomb of Galerius" in 306 AD.
• Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, built as the "New Lying-In Hospital" in 1757.
• The Rotunda at the University of Virginia, the first structure known as "The Rotunda" in 1826.
• The Rotunda in Birmingham, England, built as "The Rotunda" in 1964.
