Career
Elm St.
Cabrera was born in Dallas, Texas to a Colombian father and an European-American mother. He graduated from Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas in 2000, and went on to attend The University of Texas at Dallas for a year. While in college, he was the lead singer for the popular Dallas band Rubix Groove performing in such venues as Trees and The Gypsy Tea Room. In 2001, Cabrera went into the studio to record his own independent album, Elm St..
Take It All Away
Image:Takeitallaway.jpg The response to the album was positive and prompted Cabrera to leave his band for good. He released his first major-label album, Take It All Away, on August 17, 2004, and it debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 album chart. The album was co-produced by Goo Goo Dolls lead singer Johnny Rzeznik.
In early 2004, Cabrera had become known for his up-tempo pop-rock single "On the Way Down", which peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and number seven on the Billboard Top 40 Mainstream. "On the Way Down" was followed by Cabrera's second single, "True", and his third single, "40 Kinds of Sadness". During "True"'s run on the radio, Ryan released a Spanglish version of this song in which the lyrics were in both English and Spanish. In addition to doing a Spanglish version of "True", Ryan Cabrera also released a fully Spanish language version of it called "Solo Me Faltas Tú".
You Stand Watching
Image:Youstandwatching.jpg Cabrera's sophomore album, You Stand Watching, was released on September 20, 2005, and it included his new single, "Shine On".
The album debuted outside of the top twenty on the Billboard 200 album chart, and both album and single were considered commercial failures.
In Wal-Mart stores, the You Stand Watching album comes with a bonus disc. The bonus disc includes two new songs, "All Night Train" and "I Know What It Feels Like," as well as acoustic versions of "Exit To Exit", "Take It All Away" and "Shame On Me".
If bought on iTunes the CD includes the bonus track "Sentimental."
Relationship with Ashlee Simpson
Cabrera was romantically involved with singer and actress Ashlee Simpson from early 2004 to early 2005, and he appeared in many episodes of Simpson's reality show, The Ashlee Simpson Show. Simpson also appeared as Cabrera's love interest in the music video for "On the Way Down".
Simpson's first single, "Pieces of Me", was written about Cabrera and their relationship. The two were reported to have broken up in August 2004 because of their busy schedules, but their relationship continued and was featured in season two of The Ashlee Simpson Show. They did a series of high school concerts together in October 2004, which was seen on the show.
In February 2005, there were more reports that they had broken up. Cabrera has toured with Simpson's older sister Jessica Simpson. On the tour with Jessica Simpson, he was caught making out with Ashlee Simpson on Jessica Simpson's tour bus, according to rumors.
