Founded in 1882, SA Brain & Company Ltd, popularly known as Brains, is a brewery in South Wales that produces a number of traditional ales in the heart of Cardiff.
The brewery owns over 200 pubs across South Wales, the West Country and central Cardiff, and has recently become the shirt sponsor for the Welsh rugby union team. As French rules forbid sponsorship logos from appearing on rugby jerseys, when the team plays in France the word "Brains" is replaced with "Brawn".
The Brains brewery was originally owned by the Thomas brothers prior to 1882. Due to the owners' gambling debts it was sold.
The Old Brewery Quarter
In 1999 S A Brain moved its brewery from the Old Brewery on Saint Mary Street to a larger site just on the bay side of Cardiff Central railway station. In 2003 the now vacant Old Brewery was redeveloped into the 85,000 sq ft "Old Brewery Quarter." It is a mixed development of 55,000 sq ft of leisure space around an open-air piazza in the heart of Cardiff’s growing city centre together with 42 long-leasehold loft style apartments and penthouses.
The development has attracted a range of bar and restaurant operators including Hard Rock Café, Future 3000, Nandos, Thai Edge, La Tasca, and S A Brain's own flagship venue the Yard Bar and Kitchen.
Seasonal Beers
St Davids Ale is brewed to celebrate St David's Day and is available in February and March. Taff End is available in June and July and celebrates sponsorship of the Glamorgan County Cricket Club. Brains' "Bread of Heaven", named for a traditional Welsh rugby anthem, was launched in 2005 in commemoration of the sponsorship, and is currently a Fall seasonal.
