Sabula, Iowa

Image:MSRiverBridgeSavannaSabulaMay2004.jpg Sabula is a city located in Jackson County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 670. It is the state of Iowa's only island city. It has a beach and camp ground.

The Army Corps of Engineers constructed the line of locks and dams on the Mississippi. The one below Sabula turned it into an island.

Sabula is the eastern-most point in Iowa.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²). 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 71.53% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 670 people, 308 households, and 182 families residing in the city. The population density was 663.3/km² (1,709.3/mi²). There were 337 housing units at an average density of 333.6/km² (859.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 100.00% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 308 households out of which 23.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.6% were non-families. 36.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 2.78.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 22.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,192, and the median income for a family was $39,688. Males had a median income of $29,000 versus $20,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,901. 14.4% of the population and 11.5% of families were below the poverty line. 24.3% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
