Rei Hino

Template:Nihongo is a Sailor Senshi, one of the main characters in the metaseries known as Sailor Moon. She is known in the English translations as Raye Hino. When transformed, she is Sailor Mars.
Rei is usually identifiable by her long dark hair and the grey-red uniform she wears. Unlike the other girls she attends Toyo Eiwa Jogakuin (Toyo Eiwa Jogakuin), a real-life private Catholic school (known as Thomas Aquinas School For Girls in the English translations). However, she is a practicing Shinto, and in fact is a miko at the Template:Nihongo, where she lives.
She has a confident, frank personality but with bouts of self-doubt and brooding, which has labeled her alternatively alluring and rude. Image:Bssm3.png Rei is one of the few Senshi to have overt powers not related to her superpowered alterego. Although high school girls working as miko are not too unusual, Rei's psychic powers have caused her to be labeled a weirdo by her classmates. She can use ofuda to seal or dispel evil, and sometimes suffers from vivid dreams. She also practices pyromancy, possibly as part of her shrine duties.
Rei's Senshi-specific powers are all fire-based projectile attacks, many with single-target effects. (The planet Mars is associated with the element fire in Chinese astrology; like the other Senshi, the first kanji of her name matches that of her planet.) Her Sailor outfit is red, white, and violet. She also inexplicably wears high heels, which some fans love pointing out teasingly.
Rei lives with her kind, if lecherous, grandfather (a priest at the shrine). Her mother is dead and her relationship with her rarely-seen politician father is icy. Because of this, she generally dislikes most men, whom she sees as emotionally weak. Rei has nothing resembling romantic pursuits, except in the anime — Mamoru Chiba for a short time, and possibly an individual named Yūichirō Kumada, a good-natured vagrant turned co-worker who overtly likes her.

Manga
Image:Rei Manga.jpg Rei is a bit sarcastic and distant. She is especially close to Minako. She is determined to become a Miko. Her father is a politician and her mother died when she was little. She chose to stay with her maternal grandfather after her mother died though her father supports her.
In the manga, Rei is thought to be very beautiful and has a lot of admirers. Even Usagi Tsukino, (Sailormoon), once followed her around admiring her. She is also recognized as a "queen" in T*A private school. Though she has lot of admirers, she remains distant and does not want to have anything to do with boys because of her relationship with her father. Her father is a very busy politician and does not have time to meet with her.
Rei does have a special episode in the manga involving Kaidou, her father's secretary, entitled "Casablanca Memories." This manga story tells us that Rei and Kaidou were very good friends, and that Rei at one point even fancied herself in love with him, but Kaidou suddenly got engaged to the daughter of another politician. When Rei confronted the man, he said it was because Rei's father arranged the engagement, but she sees through him and says he loves that girl since, were this true, Rei would've become his fiancée. They share a kiss, and remain friends afterwards.
Anime
Image:Mars-05.jpg Rei's character is altered considerably, compared to the other five girls. She is more 'boy-crazy' like other teenagers, and dates Mamoru Chiba for a short time. She also has new aspirations to be an idol, a flight attendant, or a model. She is closer to Usagi Tsukino than to Minako in this adaptation though at first she doesn't have much tolerance for Usagi's antics. Usagi treats Rei as one of her closest friends. Rei also has an admirer here, Yuuichirou Kumada, who became one of the shrine attendants because he found her to be so beautiful the first time they met. Rei does not show any romantic interest on Yuuichirou though and even thought that he was just a vagrant, until Yuuichirou invited Rei and her friends to his villa in the mountains and later risked his life for her several times. She still doesn't see Yuuichirou as a romantic prospect, but does care for him and fights for his sake if needed.
Anime (dub)
Her personality in the English dub is similar to the original anime, although some changes in dialogue (especially her playful arguments) supposedly cast her in a negative light during some important scenes. Rei's given name is changed very slightly to Raye. (In an early DiC promotional tape that advertised Sailor Moon to television stations, Raye was called Dana.)
Live action
In Pretty Guardian Sailormoon Rei essentially reprises her manga persona, although some traces of her anime persona exist.
She is presented as the second leader of the four guardians after Sailor Venus. Like in the manga, her father is a businessman who she has had relationship problems with after the death of her mother many years ago. In one episode, she is forced to attend dinner with her father. Influenced by Minako, who in this version is a pop idol— she also becomes an idol singer under the name "Mars Reiko", although she doesn't like karaoke for a few episodes; it is unknown why she doesn't like it.
Fandom
Rei inexplicably attracts a large amount of angst, dark, and fetish fan fiction (perhaps due to the failed romances in the anime and her confident, aggressive personality). Her lack of interest in and sometimes open dislike of men also puts her in a relatively disproportionate amount of yuri fan fiction. In such stories she is most often paired with Usagi Tsukino and Minako Aino.
Rei also attracts a balance of both male and female fans, especially in Japan, since she represents the typical Japanese beauty. There is also a lot of fanfiction about her relationship with Jadeite, one of the shittenou (or four heavenly kings), who are called generals working for Queen Beryl in the anime.
In some of the promotional pictures for the Sailor Moon adventure dolls, Sailor Mars wore red boots similar to Sailor Moon's.

Attacks
- Template:Nihongo — In the manga, this is an attack that destroys enemies; in the anime, Rei chants before throwing ofuda scrolls while using this phrase, causing evil enemies to become frozen. In the dub, it is sometimes called Mars Fireballs Charge!.
- Fire Soul — Sailor Mars summons a fireball from her fingertips. This attack is only used in the anime. In the English version, it is called Mars Fire Ignite (or Mars Fire Blast in the English dub of the SuperS movie).
- Fire Soul Bird — Sailor Mars holds her scroll in front of her, then executes "Fire Soul", turning the scroll into a fiery bird. This attack is only used in the anime. In the English version, it is called Mars Firebird Strike.
- Burning Mandala — An attack used in the Black Moon saga. In the anime, Rei draws a circle of fire around her which turns into eight individual circles. She then focuses them into lines of energy to attack the enemy. In the English version, it is called Mars Celestial Fire Surround.
- Mars Snake Fire — An attack only used in the manga. It was used in the anime by Sailor Mars when she was regressed to the form of a child in the SuperS movie.
- Mars Flame Sniper — An attack that can only be used with the Crystal Power form of Sailor Mars. She creates an arrow of fire which she shoots at her enemy. In the anime, she also creates a bow, and in English it is called Mars Flame Shooter (original name is used in the English dub of the SuperS movie).
- Galactica Flame Sniper — In the manga, Sailor Mars uses this attack against Sailor Moon when she was controlled by Sailor Galaxia.

- In the anime, Rei is played by veteran voice actress Michie Tomizawa.
- In the English dub, Rei is played by Katie Griffin (episodes 7-65, 90-166) and Emilie Barlow (episodes 66-82). Griffin is generally considered superior.
- In the musical version, Rei has been played by 8 actresses: Hiroko Nakayama (Nakayama Hiroko), Misako Kotani (Kotani Misako), Asuka Umemiya (Umemiya Asuka), Hiromi Sakai (Sakai Hiromi), Eri Kanda (Kanda Eri), Megumi Yoshida (Yoshida Megumi), Aiko Kawasaki (Kawasaki Aiko) and Risa Honma (Honma Risa).
