Saxis is a town located in Accomack County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 337.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and 2.94% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 337 people, 148 households, and 100 families residing in the town. The population density was 394.3/km² (1,020.8/mi²). There were 193 housing units at an average density of 225.8/km² (584.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.63% White, 0.89% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.19% from other races, and 0.30% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 148 households out of which 19.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% were non-families. 26.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.71.

In the town the population was spread out with 16.6% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 26.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 92.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $18,125, and the median income for a family was $23,333. Males had a median income of $26,750 versus $19,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,404. 19.9% of the population and 17.9% of families were below the poverty line. 15.1% of those under the age of 18 and 31.9% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
