The Plot Line

Serpico became an officer in 1960, and was in the NYPD until resigning in 1972. Unlike his colleagues, he refused to share money and goods the police routinely extorted from local criminals and business operators. Because of this and his "hippie" countercultural dress and lifestyle (such as living in Greenwich Village), no other officers wanted to work with Serpico. Therefore, he was in constant danger of being placed in life threatening positions by his "partners". Nothing seemed to get done, even when he went to the highest authorities. Despite the dangers in which he found himself, he still refused to "go with the flow" and hoped that one day, the truth of his partners' corruption would be known.

Serpico was made into a 1976 television series starring David Birney.
