Shadows of Knight
From Free net encyclopedia
Shadows of Knight were an American rock band from the Chicago suburbs who played a form of British blues mixed with influences from their native city (see Chicago blues). They formed in 1964 and released 3 albums in their 5 year career.
Original members include Jim Sohns (voice), Warren Rogers (lead guitar), Norm Gotsch (rhythm guitar), Wayne Pursell (bass), and Tom Schiffour (drums). Later, Rogers switched to rhythm guitar and Joe Kelley was recruited to play lead. Guitarist Jerry McGeorge also joined.
After practicing in garages, they organized a concert at the Cellar Club, hoping to attract a record producer. During the concert, they covered "Gloria" by Them, an early Van Morrison group. Representatives from Dunwich Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records, were present. The band signed with Dunwich and their version of "Gloria" received lots of radio play. Helping them a good deal was the fact that this version was slightly sanitized from Them's original (eliminating the line "and then she comes to my room"). This allowed their record to get added to the playlist of influential Chicago station WLS, where it reached Number 1 before going to Number 10 nationally.
By 1969, Sohns was the only original member left in the group.
Some artists of Britain's Punk Rock movement of the 1970s consider the Shadows of Knight influential to their style and sound.Template:US-rock-band-stub
