Shelton is a city located in Fairfield County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 38,101.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 82.7 km² (31.9 mi²). 79.2 km² (30.6 mi²) of it is land and 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.26% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 38,101 people, 14,190 households, and 10,543 families residing in the city. The population density was 481.2/km² (1,246.4/mi²). There were 14,707 housing units at an average density of 185.8/km² (481.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.44% White, 1.12% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 2.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.89% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 3.48% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 14,190 households out of which 32.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.9% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 21.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $67,292, and the median income for a family was $75,523. Males had a median income of $50,210 versus $36,815 for females. The per capita income for the city was $29,893. 3.2% of the population and 2.5% of families were below the poverty line. 3.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
