Shire of Cardinia

The Shire of Cardinia is a Local Government Area in Victoria, Australia. It is located south-east of Melbourne between the Western Port bay and the Yarra Ranges on the outskirts of Melbourne. It has an area of 1,281 square kilometres and a population of 45,300 (in 2001). The shire was formed in 1973 by the breakup of the Shire of Berwick. The larger, eastern part became the Shire of Pakenham, which in turn adopted the current name in 1994. The council offices of the shire are situated in Pakenham.
