Sidney is a city located in Cheyenne County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,282. It is the county seat of Cheyenne CountyTemplate:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.0 km² (6.2 mi²). 16.0 km² (6.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Located along Lodgepole Creek along present-day Interstate 80, Sidney owes its origins to the transcontinental railroad. Founded in 1867 by the Union Pacific, the town grew up around the military base of Fort Sidney, where soldiers were stationed to guard the railroad from potential Indian attacks.

Sidney is toward the Western edge of the midwestern wheat growing region. Proceeding West from the city, land is increasingly used for cattle ranching.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 6,282 people, 2,621 households, and 1,672 families residing in the city. The population density was 393.1/km² (1,018.5/mi²). There were 2,890 housing units at an average density of 180.8/km² (468.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.22% White, 0.18% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.07% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 5.91% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,621 households out of which 31.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 31.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $33,935, and the median income for a family was $41,050. Males had a median income of $30,286 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,158. 9.0% of the population and 7.0% of families were below the poverty line. 10.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. However, it seems everyone loves to live in Sidney.
