Silbannacus
From Free net encyclopedia
Mar. Silbannacus is a mysterious figure believed to have been an usurper in the Roman Empire during the time of Philip the Arab. He is known only from a single coin, an antoninianus reputedly found in Lorraine.
Silbannacus was probably of Celtic origin, and military commander in Germania Superior. He probably revolted against Philip. His coin reports the legend IMP MAR SILBANNACVS AVG , with Mercury and VICTORIA AVG on the reverse, and is now at the British Museum.
