Overview and Features
Like many similar games such as Transport Tycoon or Railroad Tycoon, the only real goal of Simutrans is to create a stable economy, as well as making a company grow and avoid bankruptcy.
Simutrans features the ability to modify the terrain, build roads and rails, build various kind of transportation stops, terminals and vehicles (including buses, trains, trucks, ships, and more recently aeroplanes). Creation of powergrid networks is also supported. Up to 6 computer AI controlled players are also supported, distinguished by colour scheme(s).
Simutrans is multilingual, and includes the option of darkened nighttimes complete with city lights and vehicle headlights. For beginners, there is a freeplay command-line option to allow debt without bankruptcy.
Simutrans runs by default on Windows and Linux, with a few programming libraries, which makes it highly portable.
Production and Support
Simutrans is created by Hansjörg Malthaner, but is an open project in many aspects. For example, there are various programmers helping to make bugfixes and new features. Numerous artists have contributed the art for buildings and vehicles. Nearly every player can contribute to the development of the game, which makes the game more and more popular among transport simulation game players.
Comparison with Other Transportation Simulation Games
Unlike Transport Tycoon and Locomotion, in Simutrans passengers and mail have a destination.
The pathfinding algorithm in Simutrans is often recognized to be one of the best in any PC traffic simulationTemplate:Fact, and is commonly regarded as better than that in some commercial products. Traffic Giant is among the only traffic simulation games which contains as good pathfinding than Simutrans. Traffic Giant however, uses precomputed pathfinding, while Simutrans has a dynamic pathfinding, which adapts itself.
Modding
The game supports modding in the form of new objects. New graphics may be added using the tool makeobj. Thanks to this, many new custom graphics are created often.
There is also a mod available, which uses the graphic from Transport Tycoon, but still the transporting logic of Simutrans, called SimuTTD.
Also sounds may be customized.
